The objective is to describe error handling

Critical Errors

There are times when an unforseen event occurs within WinSwim that wasn't anticipated. If these happen as soon as you install WinSwim or often then it typically is going to be either another version of Crystal Reports was installed before or after WinSwim was installed or it is a Vista or XP SP3 UAC issue. At these locations is an Error Dialog is displayed. This dialog describes the location of the error and some of the global fields within WinSwim. You are provided the opportunity to email this information to WinSwim Support by pressing the Send Error Report button. You can see this information by pressing the click here button.

Error Dialog

Vista and XP SP3 UAC

One of the features of the Vista and XP SP3 is UAC that stands for "User Account Control". The purpose is to give programs the least amount of privledges to change settings in the operating system. This causes problems with WinSwim because some of the controls and technology used by WinSwim pre-dates this new feature and expects to have more access than UAC will provide causing strange failures. It would be nice, if it was easy to spot. But, what happens is error saying files are read only or dialogs just don't open; that you'd expect to work. WinSwim with the 4.1.1 release will sense the problem because of a predictable access failure and will give a error message telling you to set the privledges to WinSwim to Run as an administrator.

If you are running a version less than the 4.1.1 release you should set the properties of the short cut on the desktop to run as an adminstrator. Or, open the winswim.exe.manifest file in the application installation folder with a text editor, such as, Notepad.exe and change the <requestedExecutionLevel> node to be set as <requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator" />

More Information Needed

Many times the information provide in the Error Dialog is insufficient to fully understand the error. There are times where the best way to have an error corrected is to have the WinSwim database you are using and some reproducing steps. I find the easiest way and fastest for problems to be resolved is if you can repeat the error over and over then provide WinSwim Support with the following:

  • WinSwim database file (Ends with the extension .mdb and compressed into a ZIP or RAR format.)
  • Picture of the error by pressing the PrtSc key and then using Ctrl-v in Paint and save a .JPG file.
  • Set of specific steps that will cause the error to occur.
